What iOS is Missing for Me
I’m loving my iPad 2, as I knew I would. It remains an amazing device for consuming email, web pages, RSS feeds, and other content. But, I still can’t use it to do much work of any significance. And, that’s kinda frustrating.
I know that the iPad 2 a post-PC device, that it’s carving out its own use cases, that it’s not about office apps, yadda yadda yadda. But, the iPad 2 is so powerful and so easy to use, that I still wanna do real work on it anyway. And, after I’m done with that work, I’ll use GarageBand to record something that will chart top Rebecca Black’s Friday.
If Apple doesn’t think iOS can handle full multitasking at this stage, I won’t presume to have the technical knowledge to argue. But, I wish we were seeing signs that new specific types of permitted multitasking were being pursued, especially types with work uses.
I realize we all have different jobs and work differently. So, my work-related desires for iOS may be very different than yours. What I’m dying for is the ability to manage multiple clipboards and the ability to transform or expand text based on typed input. Basically, I want utilities like TextExpander and Pasteboard to be able to work fully in iOS with all apps, including Safari and Mail. And, I want to be able to invoke their actions from within all iOS apps via keystrokes or tap-revealed menus.
I know very little about iOS development. But, my hope is that the processing and battery life overhead for background text expansion and clipboard management apps would be low enough that Apple will allow them someday. It would be a huge productivity booster for me, and I suspect for many others. I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed.
